The Halmidi inscription, discovered near Halmidi village in Hassan district in 1930, is the earliest known Kannada inscription. Found near the village's western entrance and later installed at Veerabhadreshwara Temple, it was identified in 1936 by M H Krishna, then Mysore's archaeology director. The stone features a Sanskrit prayer in Brahmi script dedicated to Lord Vishnu and marks an important chapter in Kannada history.
