BusinessGST Council to Propose Ending Tax Officers' Arrest Powers
The GST Council is set to consider reforms removing arrest powers from tax officials, requiring court orders for arrests. The October 7 meeting will also discuss raising the criminal proceedings threshold to ₹5 crore and narrowing prosecution scope to exclude routine disputes on classification, valuation, or Input Tax Credit. These changes follow the September 2025 GST rate overhaul and are part of the Next-Generation GST reforms.
