GST Average Rate Drops to 10.84% After September Rationalisation

The average Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate decreased to 10.84% following the GST Council's rationalisation of tax slabs in September last year. Previously at 11.4% in 2023, the rate fell after restructuring the slabs from four (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) to two main slabs (5% and 18%) plus a 40% rate for sin and luxury goods. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman noted GST collections grew 11.6% to Rs 12.46 lakh crore in the first half of 2026-27 despite rate cuts.
