Starting January 2027, the government will assess unpaid domestic work alongside employment in the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). It will collect data on cooking, cleaning, childcare, elderly care, voluntary work, and unpaid training for people aged 15 and above. Domestic work will not be classified as employment. The new survey will also identify gig and digital platform workers, use a new sample frame for rural and urban areas, and assess underemployment and unemployment over four months per selected household.
