The Indian government will fund up to 50% of the cost for risky deepwater exploration wells under the Rs 84,084-crore Samudra Manthan scheme. If oil or gas is found, the government expects repayment from revenue after seven years of production or once operators recover 50% of costs. The scheme supports 60 wells, with state-run firms eligible to apply. ONGC plans Rs 1 lakh crore investment in deepwater exploration over five years.
