The Indian government has prohibited sugar-based ethanol in the 2026-27 procurement tender to protect domestic sugar supplies. The tender, issued by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd for about 11 billion litres of ethanol, excludes sugarcane juice, sugar, syrup, and B-heavy molasses. It reduces maize-based ethanol incentives while continuing to support the 20% petrol-blending program using maize, broken rice, and surplus rice from FCI.
