The government has amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to permit flex-fuel vehicles that can run on up to E100, nearly pure ethanol. Only vehicles designed and certified for fuels beyond E20 can use E85 or E100. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways also raised the weight limit for light petrol and diesel vehicles from 3,000 kg to 3,500 kg. Maruti Suzuki launched India's first flex-fuel passenger vehicle, the Wagon R, in June.
