Global Groups Urge WHO to Update Nitrate Limits in Drinking Water
Eighty-five global health and environmental organizations, including Greenpeace International and WONCA, have urged the World Health Organization to revise its outdated nitrate standards in drinking water. The current limits, set in 1958 to prevent blue-baby syndrome, do not reflect recent scientific evidence on nitrate toxicity, especially risks to children and pregnant women. The groups call for nitrate to be included in WHO's upcoming drinking water guideline review.
