Global Battery Storage Failure Rate Drops 98% from 2018 to 2025

The failure rate of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) worldwide declined by 98% between 2018 and 2025, according to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). In 2025, 24 incidents were reported across 634 GWh of capacity, down from 26 incidents across 343 GWh in 2024. The annual failure rate halved from 2024 to 2025. The data excludes residential systems and electric vehicles.
