SciencePhoto: HT WorldGiant Sensitive Plant Threatens 4.6 Million Hectares in Australia
The giant sensitive plant, Mimosa pigra, was introduced to Australia's Northern Territory in the late 1800s as an ornamental curiosity. It now affects 140,000 hectares, about 10% of the territory's wetlands, and threatens up to 4.6 million hectares nationwide. The spiny shrub can grow up to 6 meters high and forms dense, thorny thickets, impacting 15 catchments and three islands in the Top End region.
