SciencePhoto: HT WorldGiant Mimosa Spread Over 30% of Mekong Floodplains in Thailand
Giant mimosa, introduced to Thailand in 1947 as a cover and green manure crop, has spread across more than 30% of the Mekong floodplains. Native to tropical America, this dense, thorny plant grows up to 6 meters high and has become one of the world's 100 worst invasive species. Its spread has coincided with a 27% decline in waterbird numbers at one wetland, illustrating its environmental impact beyond farming.
