ScienceGermany's Former Coal Pit Transformed into 1,840-Hectare Lake
In Germany's Saxony-Anhalt, the former Geiseltal coal pit was flooded starting in 2003 and completed by 2011, creating a 1,840-hectare lake. This lake, up to 76 meters deep and holding 423 million cubic meters of water, has become a thriving habitat for 240 bird species. Named Living Lake of the Year 2023 by the Global Nature Fund, it is Germany's largest artificial lake.
