Germany Converts Abandoned Coal Mines into 23 Lakes and Wetlands
In eastern Germany, former lignite mining pits are being transformed into the Lusatian Lakeland, a vast network of 23 lakes and wetlands. This project spans Brandenburg and Saxony, between Berlin and Dresden, by flooding open-cast mines and restoring the surrounding landscape to create new natural habitats.
