The gaur, the world's largest wild bovine, has made a significant comeback in Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh. After disappearing, a herd of 40 gaur was reintroduced from Kanha Tiger Reserve in 2011-12. Today, over 220 gaur live in Bandhavgarh. These shy animals, with males weighing up to 1,500 kg, play a vital ecological role by grazing and dispersing seeds. They inhabit forests across India and parts of Southeast Asia.
