Around 2,500 garment workers at Shahi Exports’ Unit No 26 in Maddur, Karnataka, protested on September 29 against new Union government rules on provident fund (PF) withdrawals. The new PF scheme, introduced on June 29, imposes 12-month and 36-month waiting periods for withdrawing PF and Employee Pension Scheme funds. Workers staged the protest mostly inside factories, with some alleging they were not allowed to leave.
