Following Israel's inconclusive elections on October 27, President Isaac Herzog has tasked Gadi Eisenkot, a former military chief and main rival to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with forming a new government. Eisenkot has 28 days, extendable by 14, to build a coalition. Netanyahu's religious-nationalist bloc remains the largest but lost majority. Eisenkot has declined alliances with Arab parties but retains their external support against Netanyahu's far-right policies.
