Following the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown in Fukushima, many families fled, leaving dogs behind. A 2012 study by Azabu University researchers found that 17 rescued Fukushima dogs had five to ten times higher urine cortisol levels, a stress hormone, compared to abandoned dogs elsewhere in Japan. The disaster caused long-term displacement, separating pets from families and increasing stress in these animals.
