ScienceFrancis Halzen Wins Nobel Prize in Physics for IceCube Discovery
Francis Halzen has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos from space. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the prize in Stockholm. Halzen, 82, born in Belgium and affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, led the international team that developed the observatory using Antarctic ice to detect neutrinos, opening new avenues in astrophysics. The prize amount is 12 million Swedish kronor (about 1.2 million USD).
