Fossil Reveals First Fully Marine Amphibian from 237 Million Years Ago
The fossil Gerrothorax maritimus, discovered in China, shows that some ancient amphibians lived entirely in marine environments about 237 million years ago. This 2.4-foot-long species had a flattened, bony-armored body. Found in deep-sea sediments, geochemical tests confirmed its strontium isotopes matched Late Triassic seawater, challenging previous views on amphibian evolution.
