ScienceFlorida Restores 44 Miles of Kissimmee River and 20,000 Acres of Wetlands
Florida began restoring the Kissimmee River in 1999 to undo damage caused by straightening it into a flood-control canal in the 1960s. The project aims to reconnect 44 miles of the river channel and restore 20,000 acres of wetlands. Phase I, completed in 2001, filled 7.5 miles of canal and restored flow to 15 miles of the old river, improving habitats for wildlife.
