Water hyacinth, introduced to Florida in the 1880s for its purple flowers, spread rapidly to cover over 120,000 acres of lakes and rivers by the 1960s. Native to South America, it was initially distributed as souvenirs at a 1884 New Orleans expo. Florida has since cut its coverage to about 2,000 acres statewide to control its invasive growth.
