Florida Plans 4,800-Acre Wetlands to Filter Phosphorus Before Lake Okeechobee
Florida is developing a 4,800-acre wetland project at the mouth of the Kissimmee River to remove phosphorus pollution before it reaches Lake Okeechobee. The project, ongoing since 2019, directs stormwater through aquatic vegetation to reduce nutrient impacts, support ecosystems, provide flood protection, and offer recreational opportunities. A public meeting is set for November 2026 to discuss construction.
