First Human Death from Animal-Borne Shamonda Virus Reported in France
A 61-year-old man in France has died from the Shamonda virus, marking the first known human fatality from this animal-borne disease. The man, who had leukaemia, likely contracted the virus through a midge bite. Previously, Shamonda virus was only seen in livestock, with cases in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Health officials are investigating its transmission and human risk.
