French health authorities have reported the first known human case of the Shamonda virus in a severely immunocompromised patient who died in Lyon in early October. The virus, previously known to affect only animals, was linked to the patient's brain complications. Investigations suggest the infection may have occurred via an insect bite in eastern France. Authorities say there is no current health risk to the general population.
