ScienceFinnish Hobbyist Discovers 4.5 kg of Silver Coins from Iron Age
A metal-detector hobbyist found approximately 4.5 kilograms of silver coins near Sysmä church village on September 3. Lahti Museums considers it the largest late-Iron-Age coin hoard known in Finland. The coins, stored in two birch-bark containers and buried about 45 centimeters deep among stones, have not yet been cleaned, separated, or counted. Further study is needed to determine their exact number, weight, and dating.
