Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe launched an anti-corruption drive within his department after a scam involving 252 tons of substandard areca nut seized in Malegaon surfaced. Five officers were suspended for preparing fake reports to cover up the resale of the seized areca nut worth Rs 10 crore. The scam was uncovered in February 2024, and the court ordered destruction of the nuts in March 2025.
