Fake Gold Hallmark Stamps May Increase, GJC Warns Buyers

The Gem and Jewellery Council (GJC) has warned buyers about the rising risk of fake gold hallmark stamps. Consumers often bear the hallmarking cost when buying jewellery but many are unaware they can verify the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number via the Bureau of Indian Standards' Care mobile app. Government data shows recognised assaying and hallmarking centres rose from 1,220 in July 2022 to 1,577 in July 2026.
