PoliticsEx-spy chief arrested in Germany for treason and spying
August Hanning, former head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, was arrested on October 6, 2026, on suspicion of passing state secrets to a foreign intelligence service. He faces charges including treasonous espionage and attempted treason. An aide, Manfred D., was also arrested and charged with aiding espionage. Both arrests occurred in southern and western Germany respectively.
