Former Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul alleged that then Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud routinely sought government pre-approval on judicial appointments before the Collegium's formal deliberations. Kaul recounted that Chandrachud asked to call the government for views on proposed appointments, which Kaul opposed. The Collegium had agreed on five names, but Chandrachud wanted a sixth name approved last minute, which Kaul and others found unacceptable.
