HealthEpstein-Barr Virus Linked to Millions of Cancer Cases Worldwide
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a common human herpesvirus infecting over 90% of adults, often causes no symptoms but can lead to infectious mononucleosis if contracted later in life. A 2024 WHO cancer agency analysis estimates 2.3 million new cancer cases globally are linked to infections, including EBV, which is now associated with gastric cancer and contributes significantly to the global cancer burden.
