ScienceEl Niño Intensifies Threat to Coral Reef Recovery
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warns that El Niño is being amplified by climate warming, causing repeated coral bleaching events before reefs can recover. The UN Environment Programme compares reefs to an "overmatched boxer" facing repeated blows. The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network reports that 70-90% of tropical coral reefs may vanish even if warming is limited to 1.5°C. Recovery windows have shrunk from decades to just five or six years, with 2024's El Niño further reducing recovery time.
