PoliticsED probes Burmese network smuggling areca nuts via Mizoram
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating a large-scale smuggling network involving Burmese suppliers who moved 3,103 metric tons of dry areca nuts worth ₹1,022.25 crore into India through Mizoram's Tiau River and border areas near Zokhawthar and Champhai. The probe revealed an estimated customs duty loss of ₹408 crore. ED has attached 10 properties worth ₹8.12 crore, including a hotel in Champhai. The investigation follows a 2025 CBI FIR citing fraudulent e-way bills and forged documents.
