BusinessDomestic Tourism Boosts India's GDP by 5.2%, Employs 8.46 Crore
Domestic tourists have significantly contributed to India's economy post-COVID-19, raising tourism's GDP share to 5.2%. In FY 2024, domestic tourists spent $162.9 billion, five times more than foreign tourists' $32.5 billion. Uttar Pradesh led with 1.56 billion domestic visits out of 4.29 billion nationwide. Tourism currently employs 8.46 crore people, with projections of 1.10 crore new jobs by 2035 and a target economy size of ₹289 lakh crore by 2047. Despite infrastructure shortages, UP's religious tourism surged, especially after Ayodhya's Ram temple attracted 164 million visitors in 2024.
