DNA Study Finds 87 Rice Pests in Bird and Bat Diets in West Africa
A study in northern Guinea-Bissau analyzed droppings from 502 birds and bats in rice fields, revealing 2,276 feeding interactions involving 34 predator species and 1,347 prey types. Among prey identified to genus or species, 87 were rice pests. Birds and bats consumed similar numbers of pest species but mostly different ones, highlighting their complementary pest control roles in West African rice agroecosystems.
