WorldPhoto: Deccan HeraldDemand for Designer Traditional Lamps Rises, Handmade Clay Lamps Decline in Mysuru
During Deepavali in Mysuru, people favored lighting traditional lamps despite the popularity of new crackers and colorful designer LED lamps. However, demand for handmade clay lamps has dropped sharply. Artisan C Govindaraju from Doora village noted a decline from 10-15 lakh lamps a decade ago to about 2.5 lakh now, with many preferring molded lamps from Puducherry. Artisans are adapting by making creative lamps and other earthenware.
