US mortgage applications declined 5.3% last week despite a slight drop in 30-year fixed mortgage rates to 7.41% from 7.50%. The Mortgage Bankers Association reported that average points paid by borrowers also fell. Applications for home purchases and refinancing both decreased, with refinance applications down 2%. Economist Joel Kan noted the rate drop was insufficient to boost application activity.
