Delaware Created Artificial Reefs Using 990,000 Tons of Excavated Rock in 2018
In 2018, Delaware repurposed nearly one million tons of rock excavated from a shipping channel into artificial reefs to support marine life. The US Army Corps of Engineers collaborated with Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) to transport the rock to two reef sites in the lower Delaware Bay, enhancing underwater habitats.
