D Lakshmi: BEL's First Woman Engineer Who Modernized INS Vikrant

In the 1980s, D Lakshmi, the first woman engineer at Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), led the installation of the Versatile Console System (VCS) on the battleship INS Vikrant as part of its modernization. Despite initial Navy doubts, her leadership and expertise were praised by BEL's top management, including Capt S Prabhala, who called her the best person for the job. She later became BEL's first woman Additional General Manager and contributed significantly to defense technology simulators.
