A political controversy erupted in Hyderabad after a large statue of Lord Ram was removed from a temple on Saturday. The BJP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) criticized the Congress government for this action. The statue was installed during Dussehra at the Devi Kanak Durga temple in Basheerbagh, where VHP leaders had declared the area would be known as Shriram Chowk. Officials said removing the statue after the festival is a normal procedure. Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao condemned the Congress government, recalling past attempts to remove Ram statues.
