Coffee Alters Gut Microbes Linked to Mood and Brain Function
A study by APC Microbiome Ireland and University College Cork found that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee change gut microbes and metabolites related to mood, stress, and cognitive function. After a two-week coffee break, resuming coffee lowered perceived stress, depression, and impulsivity. Decaf improved learning and memory, while caffeinated coffee reduced anxiety and enhanced attention. The study, published in Nature Communications, is small and does not prove direct mental health benefits.
