SciencePhoto: HT WorldCO2 Addition Reduced Great Barrier Reef Calcification by 34% in 2016 Study
In 2016, scientists led by Rebecca Albright and Ken Caldeira added carbon dioxide to seawater over a patch of Australia's Great Barrier Reef for 30 days. The seawater was acidified to levels projected for the end of this century if emissions continue unchecked. Under these future-like conditions, net reef calcification decreased by 34%, showing slower calcium carbonate buildup in the natural reef community around One Tree Island.
