ScienceClimate Change Causes Major Decline in Largest Penguin Colony on Zavodovski Island
A study by the British Antarctic Survey reveals that Zavodovski Island near Antarctica lost over 680,000 chinstrap penguins, about two-thirds of its population, between 2011 and 2025 due to climate-driven changes in ocean food chains. This rapid decline threatens the species, which makes up 38% of chinstrap penguins in the South Sandwich Islands, prompting calls to reclassify them as endangered by the IUCN.
