Chief Justice of India Suryakant stated in New Delhi that the initiative to reappoint retired judges to reduce the backlog of cases in high courts stalled due to opposition from bar associations. The Supreme Court had tried to restart this system, but lawyers' groups passed resolutions against it. CJI noted that risking bar displeasure is difficult for any high court chief justice. The comments came during a hearing on judicial seniority in Rajasthan.
