Centre Streamlines Ex-Post Facto Approval After Supreme Court Order

Following the Supreme Court's July judgment on legalising projects violating environmental rules, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change issued a notification to process pending ex-post facto proposals. The court quashed a 2021 office memorandum that allowed permanent penalty-based approvals but permitted a 2017 notification as one-time amnesty. Projects without prior clearance under the Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006, are considered illegal.
