Scientists studying the ground-nesting bee Colletes inaequalis in eastern Tennessee discovered that the bees produce a translucent nest lining similar to synthetic polyester. This lining is flexible when fresh but degrades significantly within months in soil, with polyester content dropping from 73% to 40% over four months. The findings suggest potential for environmentally friendly plastic alternatives.
