BusinessCEA Urges Flexible SMA Norms for MSME Loans
Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran called for revising the 90-day overdue norm for classifying MSME loans as Special Mention Accounts (SMAs). He highlighted that diverse MSME sectors have varying cash flow cycles, making a uniform 90-day timeline unsuitable. He suggested evolving norms aligned with sector-specific cash flows rather than a global standard, noting that SMA classification often leads to de facto non-performing asset status.
