In 1807, Captain Abraham Bristow left pigs on New Zealand’s Auckland Islands to aid future sailors. These pigs were intended as a food source for castaways. Over 200 years later, feral pigs still roam the islands. Historical records show shipwreck survivors used the pigs for food, and a 2022 study reviewed their arrival and impact. Some pigs were rescued in 1999, but many remain wild.
