ScienceCalifornia Restores Bolsa Chica Wetlands with Pacific Tidal Flow
In 2006, California reopened Bolsa Chica to the Pacific Ocean, restoring tidal flow to about 1,247 acres of wetlands in Orange County. The Bolsa Chica Lowlands Restoration Project created or restored nearly 600 acres of marine and wetland habitat, funded partly by $101.4 million from Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. The area supports over 10,000 birds, 52 fish species, and serves as a nursery for commercially valuable fish like California halibut and white seabass.
