PoliticsCalifornia Bans Child Marriage, Sets Minimum Age at 18
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law banning child marriage, effective January 1, 2027. Previously, there was no minimum age, allowing children to marry with parental and judicial consent. The law sets 18 as the minimum age for marriage or domestic partnership. Newsom called it a long overdue protection for minors. Advocate Courtney Stodden, who married at 16, praised the law and vowed to fight for nationwide bans.
