The Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal government to appoint a retired High Court judge to head the inquiry commission into the Chorbagan Durga Puja stampede on October 17, which killed 19 people. The court ruled a sitting judge cannot lead the probe, following a Supreme Court directive. The government had initially proposed a sitting judge to lead the SIT investigating the incident.
